Weather Commentary

Commentary

January 2016 Another instance where it's difficult to describe what the weather felt like, since we were in East Africa for the middle three weeks of the month. It looks like it was generally fairly average, with some decent sun and something of a cold spell in the middle. The trend of warmer than average continues, with January 2°C warmer than the long-term average.
February 2016 Generally warm at the start and cold at the end. It actually felt pretty chilly, but I think that's just because we've become used to warmer than average temperatures. A dry spell at the end of the month.
March 2016 Felt comparatively cold, but was actually pretty much average for everything: rain, temperature, etc. The feature of the month was storm Katie, which was pretty windy and brought the lowest pressure for the year so far, on the 28th.
April 2016 In general, April felt quite wintry. It was one of the 3 coldest Aprils I've recorded, and we had frequent hail/sleet showers. We had a few pleasant sunny days, but it never really felt spring-like except for a short period in the middle of the month.
May 2016 Generally warm and dry, and fairly spring-like. Turned colder right at the end. It would have been a record dry month except for the last day: the first 30 days of the month yielded 12mm of rain; the final day gave us 20.4mm. We apparently got off light - other places around here got close to 50mm.
June 2016 Dull and damp. About double the average rainfall for the month - mostly in heavy, showery downpours. No hot days - the maximum temperature was a fairly low 23.9°C. Let's hope July is hotter to ripen our tomatoes.
July 2016 Noticeably warm. Nowhere near the hottest July I've recorded, but it felt hot and sticky. Day time maximum temperatures were consistently higher than the long term trend. It was also the driest July I've measured - I had to resort to filling the pond from the tap owing to lack of rainwater from the butts.
August 2016 Felt dry, hot and sunny. The garden is very parched, and I've not needed to cut the lawn for a few weeks. We've had what I class as a dry spell (where rain over a 15 day period remains below average rainfall) since July 7th (56 days).
September 2016 Another month that felt hot and dry. Statistically, "hot" is accurate. It was the second average hottest September I've recorded (2006 was 0.15°C hotter - although that was recorded with a less accurate temperature sensor). There was only one day when the maximum temperature was lower than the long-term average maximum. "Dry" is less accurate, but only because we had one day (the 16th) when 23.4mm fell - more than half the monthly total. This ended a dry spell lasting 71 days.
October 2016 Generally a fairly nondescript October, with the defining feature being that it was the driest October I've ever recorded. It ended misty. No frost, and lots of leaves still on the trees.
November 2016 Started wet, but then there was no rain for the last week. Much colder than November last year, with two very frosty nights on the 29th and 30th.
December 2016 Most notable for the continuing high pressure system which dominated the weather. Average pressure for the month was 1027 mBar - there are some months when the maximum pressure is lower than that. Minimum pressure was 1014.4, which is 1.4 mBar higher than the long-term expected average. Maximum pressure was 1045.1 - a new record high pressure for my weather station, beating the 1044 mBar set in December 2006. There were some decent frosts and quite a bit of mist and fog. It was, however, dry - the lowest rainfall I've recorded for a December.

Annual temperature was about normal for my station, but rainfall was low - about the third driest year I've recorded. Power generated was slightly low based on the EU Joint Research Centre estimating tool but higher than given by the installer's estimate.
