Commentary

January 2014 Another year, another record. This time it was for rainfall. Whilst our part of the country did not suffer from the rain as badly as many others did (in particular, the Somerset Levels and Muchelney) we still had more rain than I've ever recorded before: about twice the average. It's also worth noting that I recorded some rainfall on all bar 2 days: this can be little more than a very light shower, but it still shows how damp it was. It was also a month of consistently low pressure, averaging only 1002 mBar and high wind speeds. Good job it was warm, really.
February 2014 Very similar to January: rain, low pressure and fierce southerly winds. It was the warmest February I've recorded - about 3°C warmer than average and also the month with the highest average windspeed. According to the garden, spring has sprung.
March 2014 Warm and dry. The warmest March I've recorded, albeit only just warmer than 2012. Almost the driest, too: as ever, the garden is now very dry and the fish pond needs filling. Despite that, it was colder at night-time than February, with more frosts. Still - no doubt an early spring.
April 2014 Another warm, dry month. The maximum temperature exceeded the long term normal maximum on every day, and we only had about 30% of average rainfall. The garden is dry, but growing beautifully.
May 2014 Another comparatively warm month and the results are apparent in the garden, which is growing like mad. The unusual thing was the rainfall. To be honest, it didn't feel like a wet month, but the rainfall was dominated by two very wet days: 20 mm on the night of 20/21st, and a record 55.4 mm on the 27th. The most I had previously recorded with my weather station over 10 years was 38 mm, so this was a major event. It made this month (just) the wettest May I have recorded.
June 2014 A dry month, with no real rainfall between the 7th and the 28th. That made it feel warm and pleasant, although it was actually the third coldest June I've recorded. It was also notable for low windspeeds.
July 2014 July felt hot and dry. In practice, the records show it was averagely wet, but this would be because most of the rain fell during storms. A notable one was early in the morning of the 19th, when there was a lot of thunder and lightning (see below). There was no real rain for the last 10 days of the month, and so we're back to our usual parched garden. The farmers started harvesting grain and rapeseed a few days ago - very early, to my recollection.
August 2014 On average, the coldest August that I've recorded - this was 15.8°C and 2006 was 16.0°C. As seems the norm for August, there was more rain than the long-term average, although most of this fell on very wet days, so it felt as if there was less. We had a long period of low rainfall towards the end of the month.
September 2014 A dry month, with only 13.8 mm of rain. Not the driest I've ever recorded - that was 2011 with 9.5 mm, although the press is reporting this as the driest September since records began. That's pretty misleading, owing to the huge local variations that can occur with rainfall: for example, on the 20th, when we had 3.4 mm of rain, a trip to Essex was affected by floods following torrential rain. A weather station in Witham reports that they had 66.8 mm rain in 2 hours: don't think this month was their driest September ever! It also felt warm, particularly at the end of the month. Last year we turned the heating on on the 16th: this year it's still off.
October 2014 Writing this at the start of December, since the start of November was rather hectic. In thruth, don't remember much out of the ordinary, so won't say anything else...
November 2014 We were away in South Africa for almost all of November, so all I can say is that it looked pretty damp. I recorded more rain than any previous November, and the average humidity was an all time record, too.
December 2014 Another month of not-very-exciting weather. Warmer than the long-term average, contributing to 2014 being the joint warmest year I've measured. There were some decent frosts, but nothing really cold.
