A Tale of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities was a musical adaptation of Dickens' famous play, with the words written by Nigel Hartley and the music by Caroline Goates and Chandra James. It's a super adaptation and I feel honoured to have taken part in the first (and so far only) performances of it. We ran for 5 days in Ipswich and 3 days in the Spa Pavilion, Felixstowe (which seats around 900).

It had some wonderful songs in - I've put together a very small selection of them as midi files:

Added in 2005 - mp3s of a selection of the songs (each is about 2 megs). These were recorded in January 1996 with the
original cast (see below):

  • Fishing - the song that Jerry Cruncher (Phil Holmes = me) sings to explain his grave robbing
  • Weep for Her - a fantastic ballad sung by Lucy Manette, played by Helen Wheatley
  • Perfect Peace - Darnay (Robert Wheatley) bemoans his lot in prison, accompanied by Madame Defarge (Kathryn Marshall)
  • Monseigneur's Fancy Ball - a chorus number
  • All Called Jaques - M Defarge (Alan Heffer) explaining why all the revolutionaries are called Jacques

I played the part of Jerry Cruncher (another loud smelly part). He is the grave robber in the story. The photo is of me with my son, young Jerry, at the trial.

Old Jerry and Young Jerry

Who knows - perhaps one day it will be revived.
