Phil and Mavis's Holiday in Antarctica, 2005

Day 3 - 25 November 2005

Iguazu (S 25° 41' 02" W 54° 26' 52") to Buenos Aires (S 34° 36' 26" W 58° 22' 24").  658 miles.

Mavis at IguazuWe booked a trip on one of the excursions which would take us into the jungle and then by boat to the waterfalls. We were warned that we would get "very wet", so we prepared by buying spare shirts, flip flops and getting all our kit into plastic bags.  The jungle trip was on the back of a 4 wheel drive truck and was interesting for the diversity of the forest and the deep red soil.  The boat trip was pretty exciting.  We started by going up the rapids below the falls and then headed to the falls themselves.  The driver's main aim seemed to be to get us as far into the falls as possible.  When they said we'd get wet, they certainly weren't lying!  The picture shows Mavis after the trip, looking like she's entered a wet T-shirt contest.

The other main excitement of the day was the news that Aerolineas Argentinas were in the middle of a pilot and ground crew strike.  Most planes weren't flying.  We found out what we could from the hotel and they told us that our flight - due at 17:20 - was listed at 20:15.  Well - at least the good news was that it was listed.  We decided to go to the airport around 2 p.m. to see what was happening and there was the predictable choas.  I managed to get to the business class desk and was given boarding passes, but told it wasn't worth hanging around at that point.  We got a taxi back to the hotel, and sat and read for a few hours.  Then back to the airport at 6 p.m., a free snack in the cafe and eventually through security at about 8:15 p.m.  Our flight landed incoming at about 9:00 p.m. and we boarded around 9:30.  So we were a bit late, but happy to be moving.  The question was - what about Sunday's flight to Ushuaia?
