Phil and Mavis's Holiday in Antarctica, 2005

Day 2 - 24 November 2005

Buenos Aires (S 34° 36' 26" W 58° 22' 24") to Iguazu (S 25° 41' 02" W 54° 26' 52").  658 miles.

Got up about 7:30 and rushed down to reception to see if the suitcase had arrved. I'd rarely been more relieved and happy when I discovered it had.  Deep joy.

Butterfly at IguazaHad a leisurely morning deciding what to take to Iguazu.  Travelled light - just the 2 backpacks - left the luggage with the Jousten.

Jorge Newberry (?sp) airport was rather chaotic on land side but very pleasant airside.  Flight was good and uneventful, but with a spectacular view of the falls as we came in to land.  We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel - we also had to pay $30 each  entry fee for the National Park.

Iguazu FallsWe stayed at the Sheraton Hotel - it was expensive, but it's inside the park and seemed the only thing to do.  Can't compare it with the other hotels, but it was an unexceptional room but stunning location.  The room had a balcony with a warning against feeding the monkeys (!).

Once we'd dumped everything in the room, we went for a walk to the falls.  The walks are really excellent - well laid out and generally easy going.  The falls themselves are stunning - 10 times better than Niagara.  The location in the forest means that you keep coming across other bits of the falls as you walk along, or other, even more amazing views.  The butterflies are also a sight to behold, as is the wildlife generally.

We had dinner in the hotel restaurant - we were keen to get a fall view, so got there just before it opened.  We needn't have panicked - we had it to ourselves for about 45 minutes.  It was a genuinely magical time.
